eBay Phishing Scams (not Fishing Scam)

Last Updated:[3/20/2007 12:03:35 PM]

It is wise to always be cautious of emails that seem to come from eBay. In recent years scams have been on the rise and crooks are targeting eBayers. eBay does sends valid messages from time to time to its users for things such as auction ending and invoice due etc. Crooks are taking that knowledge and creating fake emails with eBay's logos and verbage. They hope to get people to click on and type in their username and password into a fake website. The fake website looks like the real thing but is really a clone that is completely designed to steal your information.

People often report suspicious eBay messages from different eBay user IDs. They seem to be targeting sellers by implying a that scammer has hijacked your auction, and baiting you to look.

Example:

"Hello, My name is _____.

I just saw this item of yours and I remember seeing the same item two days ago, take a look: "

It includes a hyperlink to a purported eBay auction. But if you copy/paste the auction number into an eBay search window, it's not valid. Don't click on the hyperlink!

Other scams warn that a billing errors may have been made on the account and urge the eBay member to login and verify the charges.

Always forward these types of messages to spoof@eBay.com so eBay knows and can deal with it.
